Hiking Culture
This page highlights the culture of hikers and long-distance backpackers. Culture is a combination of beliefs, values, attitudes, customs, traditions, practices, language, foods, arts, and so much more, shared by a distinct group of people, united by one central element. A simplistic definition of culture includes the “characteristic features of everyday existence (such as diversions or a way of life) shared by people in a place or time.” Hiking is certainly a diversion and long-distance backpacking is certainly a way of life. And there is certainly a hiking culture with distinct values.
